NIKE’s FY21 year was all about Breaking Barriers, changing NIKE culture, emphasizing diversity and inclusion, practicing more transparency with investors and consumers, and bettering their sustainability practices. This theme was expanded on throughout the impact report through the pointed, breaking elements in the illustration style and the color palette used throughout the report uses a NIKE inspired color palette, but more vibrant to match the bright, energetic illustrations highlighting the diverse athletes. The typography is also breaking lots of grid elements to match the Breaking Barriers theme while still using NIKE’s typefaces. Elysian speaks to the romantic, the lover, and the friend whose love language is gift-giving. Elysian needed a brand identity, a logo, brand guidelines, physical truck design, packaging, and digital advertisements. The branding is flirty and elegant to attract their target audience. For the typography, we used Monarcha, Plantain, and Swear Text, which were all elegant serifs, each with different thicknesses and varying serifs that emulated the shapes of leaves and stems. The color palette of the brand is inspired by airy, bright, spring colors meant to emulate different flowers and seasons while offering different tones and values to use across brand assets. <img + App 2022 WORK CATEGORY Art Direction, Editorial Design, Printing + Binding, App Design PROJECT DETAILS With Guatemala having the largest amount of Latinx Refugees coming into the United States, the the Cultural Orientation Resource Center needed a guidebook to help welcome incoming refugees. A large part of Guatemalan refugees are younger indigenous girls. So for the color palette we go inspiration from Guatemalan textiles.As for the typography, the entire booklet uses the typefaces MD Maya and the Merel family. MD Maya is a display typeface created by the design studio Moby Digg. It was inspired by the indigenous Mayan civilization that inhabited land in Guatemala and other parts of Central America. The typeface takes inspiration from ancient Mayan runes and hieroglyphics. We used it to help create illustrative typographic imagery to create visual interest for the reader. Playing with scale and color to create stunning type based imagery that aims to grab the attention of our audience. BWR is known for it’s high energy and challenging atmosphere, it’s a race unlike no other. The approach for this visual brand identity was focused on the energetic racing atmosphere that BWR and racers cultivate. The logotype uses the display typeface Find Replace because it’s shapes resemble bike tire tracks. The goal was to create a visual brand identity that represented racing culture. We took the checkered elements and bike tire track elements of the logo and pushed them further across the different elements of the branding. Mentorship Program at Chapman University is a program that is designed to empower students to explore their varying identities and life experiences through mentoring relationships with peers, staff, or faculty. While interviewing incoming college students, I learned how hard it is for students to meet other students and mentors of similar interests, backgrounds, and identities. Our solution was to create a speaker event called WeCU Talks that where speakers of different industries, backgrounds, and identities can come talk and inspire students. The brand identity implements typography that is breaking the grid, geometric shapes, and a shape based logo that was made out of physical paper before being digitized.
