PROJECT DETAILS
A typographic exploration about the intersection between ethnicity, identity, and racial healing through typography.

The Chillona Self-Care Kit is a project meant for young Mexican-American students in Oxnard, California struggling with internalized racism. This three chapter journal is meant to serve as a safe, healing, relfective space where youth are able to reflect on their relationship with their ethnic identity and celebrate what they love about it. It’s meant to help them realize they’re not alone and that these feelings aren’t their fault.

The self-care kit also includes a merchandise line and a typographic mural to be placed at Hueneme High School in Oxnard, California.

The whole project implements Cholo and Mexican-American aesthetics and typography that I grew up around living in Southern California. The aesthetic design of the zine is meant to accept the Mexican-American aesthetics I grew up ashamed of as a form of healing and celebration.

I am in no way taking credit for any of the content/definitions. This is strictly a school project and will not be sold/reproduced.
